Earl Rogers was born in upstate New York in 1869. Sworn into the practice of law in California in 1897, Rogers' prolific legal career in Los Angeles spanned twenty-one years, ending in 1918.

United Railroad chief Patrick Calhoun on charges of corruption and bribery of public officials in San Francisco

Rogers tried 77 murder trials, losing but three. In an era when there was no television, when radio and moving pictures were in their infancy, the daily newspapers of Los Angeles communicated the news to its citizens. Their coverage of Earl Rogers made him a man of great celebrity.

This book reveals Rogers through his most famous trials, including extensive quotes from the trial transcripts, biographical sketches of the participants, and analyses of the often amazing verdicts.

Handsome, brilliant and famous, he was also a raging alcoholic and a womanizer. His young daughter, Adela Rogers (St. Johns), who went on to achieve great fame as a writer and journalist, would often have the responsibility of looking for her father on the eve of a big trial, only to find him drunk in a sporting house. After a trip to the turkish baths, Rogers would be back in court doing battle brilliantly, only to disappear at trial's end for the process to repeat itself again and again.

Despite earning a huge fortune in legal fees as California's foremost trial lawyer, the cunning talented, charismatic and prolific Earl Rogers, a man whose words could move a jury from tears to laughter at will, died penniless in 1922 in a Los Angeles boarding house; a hopeless and broken-down drunk at the age of 52.

If attacked, one needs to know what they can do to stop the encounter. The more time an attacker has before being subdued, the more a victim can be injured, or worse. The seven most vulnerable parts of the body are the eyes, the nose, the throat, the groin, the knees, the shins and the top of the foot. Striking any of these areas with force can cause an attacker immense pain or nervous system responses. This can give the victim time to escape.

Striking the nose will cause the eyes to water. Poking one eye with a finger will cause the other to close. These are sympathetic nervous responses. The assailant has no control over these responses. Airflow can be cut off with a strike to the throat. A strike to the groin can render a male attacker helpless. Knees, whether striking from the front, back or sides can put an attacker on the ground. A kick to the shin, which contains many nerves and not much to protect them, is very painful. A stomp on the top foot can break bones very easily.

Most martial arts practitioners know these vulnerable areas as well. They are taught to use the most force possible during a life-threatening scenario. The faster an assailant is rendered harmless the faster the victim can escape. The important thing to remember is do not be timid when striking. The attacker could become more dangerous if they feel one is weak and not able to defend themselves.

It's a sad fact, but crime is on the rise all over the United States. When times are tough economically, criminal activity generally increases. So how do you protect your home, property and family members? One of the best things you can do is work with your neighbors to prevent crime.

The Neighborhood Watch Program was established by the National Sheriffs' Association in 1972 to help citizens protect themselves and each other from criminals. Since then the program has grown and become very well respected, but the success of any neighborhood watch depends entirely on the effort that people put into it. With a little time and patience, it's easy to create a beneficial watch group. Here's how you can get started:

Step 1: Talk to your neighbors and generate interest. Explain how you can all work together to prevent crime and keep people safe. Set a date for a meeting to discuss establishing a crime watch group, and invite everyone to attend and participate.

Step 2: Contact the local police and let them know you are forming a neighborhood watch. Law enforcement offers are in favor of these crime prevention programs, because they help keep the entire community safe. They will usually have tips, suggestions and advice on how you can get started and build your group. In most cases a representative from the police station will be willing to come speak at your meeting and answer questions.

Step 3: Hold your first meeting and give everyone time to mingle and get to know each other. Consider starting with a potluck or providing refreshments to encourage people to socialize. The CSIS U.S. Defense and National Security Group and Defense-Industrial Initiatives Group examined eight years of defense reforms during the administration of George W. Bush and identified for the incoming administration (1) successful reforms to maintain, (2) partially successful reforms to improve, (3) and failed experiments to halt.

Presidential transitions often bring the promise of new opportunities and the threat of reversing key advances. With this in mind, the CSIS U.S. Defense and National Security Group and the Defense-Industrial Initiatives Group conducted a study aimed at informing the next Secretary of Defense's transition decisions. The CSIS study team focused on the little understood organizational and process changes that the Bush administration has implemented in an attempt to improve the Defense Department s internal operations in the categories of strategic direction, force development, force employment, force management, and corporate support. The study team found that the attempted Bush administration defense reforms ran the gamut from qualified success to qualified failure.

Top 10 recommendations for the next Secretary of Defense:
Acquisitions: Institutionalize recent guidance, restore a defense acquisition workforce, and provide cost realism in setting program requirements.
Strategic Guidance: Establish three to five discrete and manageable priorities and task the D(PA&E) or other official to report quarterly on efforts to achieve these priorities.
Program and Budget: Require the D(PA&E) or other official to assume all capability portfolio assessment responsibilities from the current capability portfolio managers and reinstitute separate annual Program (Capability) and Budget Reviews.
OUSD(P) Reorganization: Ensure at least ASD-level emphasis on nuclear, space, and cyber matters. Create Director for Strategy, Execution, and Assessment or realign Policy Planning and FT&R organizations under a single manager.
Joint Requirements: Add functional combatant commanders as voting members of the JROC. Add the commander, USJFCOM to the JROC as the Department's Future Joint Force Advocate.
UCP Revisions: Direct OSD and the Joint Staff to undertake a zero-based assessment of the unified command plan and revisit the roles and responsibilities of USNORTHCOM, USJFCOM, and USSTRATCOM.
Joint Concepts: Direct CJCS to place a hold on all joint concept development except Joint Integrating Concepts and to create a Senior Advisory Panel to provide recommendations regarding the concept development process.
OUSD(I): With the DNI, clarify USD(I) authorities and responsibilities in the Intelligence Community. Direct the CIO to serve as an approval authority on all relevant PPBS and acquisition issues.
Adaptive Planning and Execution System: Require the Director, DISA to provide in-person monthly reports on progress in deploying a full suit of enabling software for adaptive planning.
Future Security Environment: Direct selected defense officials to meet as a Futures Group to cultivate a shared understanding of DoD's long-range fiscal, technological, geopolitical, and military operational projections.

The report incorporates a wide range of personal interviews with key Bush administration defense officials, career civilian and military subject matter experts, defense contractors, and leading outside defense thinkers, including senior leaders from previous administrations.

Following the example of nineteenth-century political philosophers such as Alexis de Tocqueville and John Stuart Mill, Manent first describes a few essential features of democracy and the nation-state, and then shows how these characteristics illuminate many aspects of our present political circumstances. He ends by arguing that both democracy and the nation-state are under threat--from apolitical tendencies such as the cult of international commerce and attempts to replace democratic decisions with judicial procedures.

John of Salisbury (ca. 1115–1176) studied with almost all the great masters of the early twelfth century, served as an aid to Thomas à Becket (1118–1170), was friend to Pope Hadrian IV, an annoyance if not an enemy to England's King Henry II, and died as Bishop of Chartres.

Daniel D. McGarry was a professor of history at Saint Louis University. He died in 1999. His translation of The Metalogicon was the first to appear in any modern language.
